| Well, Amanda... |
[Jul. 9th, 2007|09:44 am] |
Where the hell is your SaversBlog? You come on here afters months of silence, write a lengthy post about an exciting, nay, visionary new project and then never follow through? WTF?
Well friends, let's take a moment to recognize that if I haven't followed through, it just means all is right with the universe. And isn't that rightness something we can all feel good about?
As it turns out, it's a lot harder to take object photos than I had realized, particularly with my lame-o camera which absolutely refused to take pictures indoors. So I had to steal Polly's camera, and then I had to not use it for a while, and then I had to charge some batteries, and then I had to take some mediocre photos and pout and accept that I'm just a mediocre person and everyone who reads my LJ already knows that, so whatever, and THEN I had to realize that our cameras take different cables and I could not upload those fucking ugly pictures yesterday anyway.
So I have no SaversBlog for you yet, but I'm feeling chatty so I'll grace you with some of the drivel dancing around in my head right now. I'm back at the big fancy ad agency for a second week of doing absolutely nothing but reading the internet; mmmm, the internet. I'm going home for a visit next week and damn if I'm not peeing my pants with excitement. I cannot wait to lie around my parents' air conditioned house and go swimming in the neighbor's pool with my brother and eat Tasti D-Lite and visit my sister and Joe and grill with my parents and drink beer with Iris, and, if I'm very lucky, eat some of my very favorite pork product, available exclusively in NJ. What a lucky girl I am.
Also, in light of the copious amount of time I've been spending online, I feel an obligation to spread the love on all the folks who have been keeping my entertained during my 8-5. 1) One Good Thing - hands down my favorite fucking blog. Just cannot get enough of it. 2) Pussy Ranch - local gal made good Diablo Cody. Her book Candy Girl is amazing and her blog is like candy. 3) Feministing - just like it sounds like, making me a well-informed lady 4) Feministe - ditto 5) I Will Dare - a pal from my fiction class 6) Pink of Perfection - everyone who would read my lj probably already knows about it, but whatever, it's still cool despite the fact that I never make any of the things she does, I now know how.
Well friends, that's all I've got. This is Amanda LazyPants from the big fancy ad agency wishing you all a good day. |

| New Leaf: SaversBlog |
[Jul. 2nd, 2007|12:24 pm] |
That's right! Amanda is turning over a new leaf and in the absence of anything real to say, I'm going to chronicle my quest to develop my "Savers' Eye."
"Savers' Eye?" you say "Is that some sort of eye fungus you contract from rubbing your eyes after you touch all the weirdly smelly Savers' clothes?"

Fools!
It's the ability to go to Savers and come out without having suffered extreme agony and with some fashionable new accessories. This is not a skill I possess; in the past, I've gone to Savers every month or so, spent close to an hour shopping and emerged with some unnecessary glassware and an ill-fitting T-shirt which I purchased because I'd been in that store for close to an hour dammit and I was not going to walk out empty handed. I'd take the shirt home, wash it, never wear it, and eventually dump it in one of those red bins outside Savers, effectively providing a laundry service for which I paid, as I headed off to Old Navy to spend more money on slightly more expensive ill-fitting shit.
No more, my friends. I am convinced that the Savers Eye is an acquirable skill--and acquire it I will goddammit. In light of my 1) renewed efforts to become a greener human 2) impending year of Americorps-induced poverty 3) desire to be sassy
I'm taking a new Savers tactic, the rules of which are listed below.
1) I will go at least once a week 2) I will spend no more than 20 minutes in the store 3) I will spend no more than $10 with a particular exception made for larger ticket items -if and only if I have expressed particular need for the over-budget item before encountering it in the store and -if and only if I would otherwise be going to a traditional retail outlet to purchase it. 4) I will, for the most part, restrict myself to Savers; however, any other "thrift" but NEVER "vintage" store may act as a suitable substitute.
"What does this have to do with me?" you query? Patience, gentle reader, patience.
I will be writing a weekly SaversBlog! I will provide photographs of my new items, a price list, and, if the spirit moves me, some potentially witty commentary on the nature of my purchase.
As I am already in week three (four?) of this journey, I will be posting some back-purchases. I welcome and encourage any and all feedback or suggestions on the rules and structure of my Savers quest. |

Hey, look at the back of Amanda's car.

Wow--she must have some anger issues...

Thanks a lot Edina. Thanks a fucking lot. |

| Why I can't "dig it" |
[Mar. 15th, 2007|12:49 pm] |
I am uncool. When I think of myself, I think of the dorky version of Lester Bangs played by Philip Seymour Hoffman in Almost Famous, except instead of obscure music facts I know meaningless trivia about the history of English literature, the SAT, and chiropractic (putting me even further away from cool.) I listen to folk music and blog about soup and buy "vintage look" t-shirts from Target. I'm not saying this to ellicit supportive comments--I don't wanna be a hep cat, don't wanna be down, just don't even want to pick up a shovel to dig it.
All that being said.
For those of you who read my uncool LJ, you may remember about three years ago when I was in France I dully blogged about a really cool French band. I heard them on the radio, obsessed, bought their CD, saw them in concert and generally adored them. I told everyone about this super cool band, and guess what? Nobody cared!!!!
WELL!
Imagine my fucking surprise when I heard them on the radio, a song from their album that CAME OUT THREE YEARS AGO no less, or heard them on an ipod commercial, or just heard them playing live at SXSW. Not that I'm down on their success. I'm not indie rock, I feel happy for them and their widely spread awesomeness. Only once, ONCE, in my whole stupid life have I ever found a super cool ANYTHING that got cool way later and now I feel robbed.
NO ONE KNOWS I WAS SECRETLY COOL FOR LIKE A LONG TIME!!!!!!!
I guess I'll get over it. As Hoffman says in the movie, “The only true currency in this bankrupt world is what you share with someone else when you're uncool.”
Anybody wanna hang out? |

| Food Blog! |
[Mar. 14th, 2007|03:11 pm] |
I slept over at my lady's house last night for the first time since some night in the winter--her room is essentially unheated save a well-meaning but utterly overpowered space heater my mother sent her as a Christmas present. In addition to being a little small for her BIG HUGE ROOM, it provides light, and I do mean bright light, in addition to heat, making it an interesting evening choice. In any event, now that it's warm, I decided to give it another try instead of being a big winy brat who always insists on sleeping at my house. All in all it was a good experience, she fed me Holy Land hummus and olive tapanade and I stole some almond butter from the crunchy vegan family she lives with. I'm so glad I decided I like olives!
This morning she made me muesli, which, once I picked out the raisins, was delicious. Also it came in a teeny tiny bowl with lizards on it and the vegans have a new lamp from Savers which is shaped like a flower--I tried to google image it for you guys, but I think it's one of a kind. Suffice it to say, it is worth a trip to Powderhorn Park.
After the gym and much puttering around the house, I ate Trader Joe's creamy tomato soup for lunch with a big pile of steamed broccoli with a tiny bit of peanut sauce on it. Although this was not on my list of summer foods, per se, I think it's a fine example of a seasonally transitional meal--freshly steamed vegetables = summer! savory soup = crisp gray day! Amanda's stomach = Hooray!!! |

| Seasons and Food |
[Mar. 13th, 2007|12:06 pm] |
So I've always been a food person, and I've long been a really seasonal person (by which I mean my memories and self equate very strongly with particular season, and especially the changing seasons) and now it turns out I'm a SEASONAL FOOD PERSON.
What does this mean?
In October, I get excited to make vats of chili and soup and stay warm in front of the stove. At this point in the season, the idea of another cup of chili makes me want to vomit. bleh.
Which is why it's awesome it's getting warm out. Here are some things I'm excited to eat this summer: -corn on the cob -tomato and avocado salad -salad in general -things that are grilled -popsicles -frozen grapes -all the veggies Polly and I are going to grow in our community garden plot!!!! (Polly has more faith in the reality of these vegetables--I am more excited about the notion. My childhood gardening experience was hampered by the fact that I don't really like to move or be hot in the sun or take care of things, so my plants never grew).
I will also make a big pitcher of Good Earth iced tea and drink it all the time and open up our sun porch and open all the windows. The spring also always makes me want to be a hippie again like when I was in high school--so maybe I will put some some Bob Marley and light some nag champa while I'm doing all that. |

"None of this is new to Minnesotans, regardless of where they live. People in the Twin Cities certainly know snow and cold. It’s a matter of intensity, ugliness, the difference between erotica and pornography. I once wrote in a short story that “there is no lee side” to a blizzard out here. The trees are decorative and few; buildings are too far apart to create wind-free channels. This translates to isolation. Writing is, of course, a solitary act, but this should be optional, as evidenced by the lack of good fiction emerging from penitentiaries." -John Salter |

i dropped my whole family off at the airport this morning to go to my cousin's wedding in michigan. i've been feeling pretty guilty about not going, but after waking up at 7:30 to bring them, nothing seemed better than a weekend lying around drinking iced coffee and excusing myself from the forced-sociability that characterizes my working hours.
i closed all the blinds and took a long nap on the couch. maybe i'll go to the gym and maybe not. i'll tell you for damn sure i'm gonna drink a few beers in the sun. |

| Paris is making my life better |
[Apr. 23rd, 2006|06:31 pm] |
|
Today I slept late, ate freakishly huge grapes and a hard-boiled egg, drank a coffee on my way to the pompidou centre, met a charming frenchman on my out, graying hair, fashionista, named Jean-Claude, he took my elbow (does it get anymore charming than that?) and we watched street theatre and he brought me dark chocolate with hazlenuts and then his friend gerard appeared behind us and pulled silver dollars out of my ears, and they insisted i stay with them just a bit longer, and when i finally did leave, it was sent off with bisous and phone numbers. it started to pour and i crowded under an awning with these really loud french teenagers, and everyone's feet got wet, and when it let up a little i ran home and put on a big sweatshirt and ran around the apartment in my bright orange socks. |
